Egyptian Tabla: Hassan Youssef (Intermediate/ Advanced Level) Hassan Youssef is a master tabla player and tutor of more than 40 years experience.Intermediate and advanced players will improve their playing technique and learn to play with a real Egyptian flavour! All will come away with a tabla solo tailored by Hassan.
Req/ Riq: Hassan Youssef (Intemediate/ Advanced Level) Hassan Youssef has been playing Arabic instruments including the req for 40 years. Participants will learn a range of rhythms and techniques for playing this instrument.
Sufi Rhythms and Raqs Sufi Workshop: Hassan Youssef Hassan Youssef will teach Sufi rhythms and melodies for a range of Arabic instruments. This can include tabla, req, doof, sagat, oud, ney and rababa. Hassan spent 30 plus years in the Egyptian Dervish Troupe and is an experienced and knowledgeable teacher.
Anisa and Sabah have been performing and teaching raqs sufi dancing and drumming for 6 years. These dancers set the stage for, and accompany the Dervish dancer. Workshop participants are welcome to join us in the performance concert. Loose comfortable clothing and rubber soled shoes recommended.
Persian Def: Amir Naderi (All Levels) The Def is a large frame drum used in Persian and Sufi music. Learn techniques specific to this drum – different to other frame drums due to the many rings inside the drum which form part of the sound of the instrument. Persian and Sufi rhythms will also be taught and workshops are divided into different skill levels.

The Cross Rhythm Ensemble (Open Level): Matt Stonehouse This ensemble workshop is aimed at crossing different rhythms and patterns to create a trance effect and just a super funky wall of sound in general!
Ornamentation of Rhythm: Matt Stonehouse (Intemediate Level) Bring a rhythm to life! Learn how to ornament rhythms and solo ideas using techniques from all over the Middle East.
Advanced level technique: Matt Stonehouse This class focuses on Turkish split finger technique and other advanced level techniques including playing rhythm and soloing at the same time!
Frame drumming: Matt Stonehouse (Open Level) Learn all about the many frame drums of the Middle East and beyond such as the Riq, Bendir, Daf and Tar in this open level frame drumming workshop.
Drumming for tribal bellydance: Madonna Teitzel & Peter Van Vuuren Learn an arrangement for percussion ensemble and use a variety of techniques to cue rhythm changes. Participants will have the opportunity to accompany the 2 nd ATS Bellydance workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring a variety of instruments including darabuka, frame drum, riqq, zills and tabal.
Tabla baladi: Peter Van Vuuren Middle Eastern rhythms and technique for the big drum. Suitable for tabla baladi (tabal), tapan.
Arabic Riq (Beginner level): Tamara Taylor The Riq is a wonderful instrument that adds colour and excitement to both small ensembles and big orchestras, in Arabic music. This delightful percussion instrument has many sounds and qualities, creating a huge range of possibilities for a skilled Riq player. This introductory workshop will cover techniques, Egyptian rhythms and variations.
Tapan/Davul for dancers (beginner to intermediate):Malindi Morris In this workshop you will learn some of the common dance rhythms used in Balkan dancing, along with ornaments to give your Tapan/Davul playing a pinch of spice!
Trakya Davul (beginner to intermediate):Malindi Morris Learn some exciting variations on the karsilama rhythm that is so popular throughout Turkey in their folk and dance traditions. Explore Turkish Gypsy rhythms from the Trakya region ( Thrace ), to be played as part of the camp's Trakya Ensemble.
